In order for us to succeed as individuals and as a species, Berry argued, we must understand the story of the universe. Together with cosmologist Brian Swimme, Berry developed a “new story” evolutionary cosmology, unifying science and spirituality that views humanity, the Earth, and the universe as a single, multifaceted evolutionary event. The unity of planet Earth is particularly evident: every being on it is deeply involved in the life and functioning of every other being.

The omnipresent psychic dimension of the universe since its beginning must be considered the ability of individual beings for orderly self-development, self-expression, and intimate introduction to other modes of being.

The three fundamental laws of the universe, across all planes of reality, are differentiation, subjectivity, and community. These laws determine reality, values, and the direction in which the universe evolves.

The universe contains within itself a violent as well as a harmonious aspect, but in its broader development it is still creative.

The Earth within the solar system is a self-emergent, self-replicating, self-nourishing, self-educating, self-governing, self-healing, and self-fulfilling community. All of the individual life systems of the planet must integrate their existence and functioning within this vast complex of interdependent terrestrial systems.

Man evolves within the living systems of the Earth as a being in which the universe reflects and celebrates itself in a special mode of self-aware consciousness. Man is genetically coded for further cultural coding, thanks to which he manifests his specifically human characteristics in remarkable diversity in different regions of the Earth.

Domestication: the transition to village life and greater control over the forces of nature took place in the Neolithic period, 12,000 years ago – the beginnings of agriculture, animal domestication, weaving, pottery and the production of new stone tools.

Classical civilization: the progressive alienation of man from the natural world. The emergence of cities, the development of religious expression in rituals and architecture, the development of specialized social functions, the rise of centralized government, the invention of writing and related technologies.

The scientific-technological, industrial phase of civilization: in Europe and North America, the Earth begins to be violently plundered. Its functioning, in terms of chemical balance, biological systems and geological structures, is changing enormously. The atmosphere and water are polluted on a large scale, the soil is eroded and toxic waste accumulates. The mystique of the Earth is fading from human consciousness.

Ecological age: a new intimate relationship with the integral functioning of the natural world is sought; destructive anthropocentrism is replaced by ecocentrism; there is a shift from the primacy of the human community to the primary importance of the integral community of the Earth.

The newly developing ecological community needs the mysticism of exaltation and discovers it in the renewal of the great cosmic liturgy that celebrates the new story of the universe and its emergence through the evolutionary process.

The text by Thomas Berry, "Twelve Principles for Understanding the Universe and the Role of the Human in the Universe Process", was translated from the English original by Jiří Zemánek.

Thomas Berry (1914-2009) was an American cultural historian, religious scholar, cosmologist, leading thinker in the de Chardinian tradition, and one of the most provocative ecological thinkers of the 20th century.
